There are three main types of plagiarism. The first is student plagiarism, which begins in school and continues during the course of study. The second is academic plagiarism, which is used to strengthen the positions of candidates for public office. The third type is the illegal use of software and technology, including artificial intelligence, to improve learning or work. These types of plagiarism come in different forms and consequences, making them important to consider in today’s world.
Editorial work can significantly affect the author’s text. Our experience shows that legitimate procedures of authenticity enhancement, text proofreading, literature formation, and review can significantly change the original texts. The processes of peer review and adjustment to the requirements of journals and methodological approaches also affect the content of the text. This is not an issue of plagiarism, but it requires attention.
Modern anti-plagiarism systems are based on the analysis of online data, determining who first published a text and where. These programs can take into account contexts and detect rewritten or translated text. They help to accurately identify the original text, which is a key aspect in determining plagiarism. According to Ukrainian law and international practice, any secondary versions of a text are considered plagiarism.
Dealing with technical plagiarism involves two parts: detecting plagiarism in the text and identifying fragments created by artificial intelligence. The second task is more difficult due to new technologies. Popular plagiarism detection platforms include Unicheck, Turnitin, Plagscan, iThenticate, and PlagTracker. Winston AI, ContentDetector.AI, CrossPlag AI, TraceGPT AI Plagiarism Checker, GPTKit are used to detect AI-generated text. However, there is no free software for checking texts for AI yet.
